Any designer knows, you can’t under estimate the power of impactful lighting. But in order to get it right, here are a few tips to follow every time.

  1. Start with key, high impact areas of the home and dedicate the majority of your lighting budget to these areas. These fixtures should be the pieces you love and can’t live without. Check out this light in the image above from Slamp. Now that is a show stopper.

2.Make sure that you work with a lighting expert who understands lumens, kelvins and all the other terms that you do not. If the fixture you love only allows for one bulb, make sure that is all you need. Otherwise, use it in multiples or add some pot lights as well. These Cocoon pendants from Maxim Lighting work great in groupings.

3. Make sure the light you pick can do the job required. In other words, you need good lighting where important tasks are happening, so make sure you are going to get it. This LED pendant from Hollis-Morris is a beauty, but might not give you the light you need for doing homework at your dining table. But with additional flexible lighting it could be an amazing addition to your space.

4. Understand how you are going to use a space. Bedside sconces can be a great option to keep your side tables free of clutter and easy to clean, if you like to read in bed. This is one of our latest favourites from Currey and Company.

5. The master bathroom is probably the most important room in the house to get your lighting right. With the sudden surge of LED bar lighting, the need to get the light output right is tougher than ever. Don’t forget, if you have dark walls in your bathroom, you will need to up your light output even more. This cute bath vanity light from Hudson Valley is on our list of need-to-use this year!

  6. And lastly, select simple, simple, simple fixtures for the non-key areas like closets, hallways etc. This is where you can save some pennies and by keeping the fixtures fairly simple, you keep you and your guests eyes focused on the more interesting fixtures that you love. This one from Arteriors Home is a timeless and classic look in a bronze finish.
